Every time you turn on your news channel, your television screen is filled with horrible images. In today’s world, no one seems to focus on the good anymore. Individuals are over-stressed and over-worked. There is rarely enough time to slow down, take a deep breath, and just enjoy life. Most people have bills to pay and families to support, and if they slow down then they are taking away from the family. At least, that is how they feel. Human beings have a habit of getting caught up and life and forget to enjoy it. You only live once. Unless you believe in reincarnation, then you only live this life once.
So, with all the bad stuff in the world, eight million to do lists, and everyone needs some of your time or for you to do something, how can you possibly have time to be happy? You’re not like that couple down the street that goes on vacation once a month. You can’t afford it. So, what can you possibly do? It’s simple really. You do not need to spend a lot of money to live a happier life. All you must do is learn to take a breath and enjoy the small things in life. Here are some little ways you can increase your appreciation for the world around you and increase your happiness.
Don’t Be Cranky: Sleep
As simple as it sounds, sleep is one of the easiest things you can do to enjoy the small things in life. Sleep increases your productivity. If you are getting more done, you will have more time to spend doing the things you love. Think of your brain as an electronic device. They either need a power source or batteries. Without this, they don’t operate the way that they should. When the batteries get low on power, devices tend to stop working properly until the batteries are either recharged or replaced. While it would cure every neurological disorder in the world, you can’t replace your brain. Instead, you need to recharge your batteries. Doing so will help you stay focused, be organized, and get through each day. Sleep is one of the key ingredients to keeping your energy levels up. When you do not get enough sleep, you become cranky, unproductive and disorganized. Going to bed as little as fifteen minutes earlier than you normally do can make a huge difference in your productivity, your mood, and your outlook on the world around you.
Another task you can do to enjoy the small things in life is to reflect on the world around you. Turn off the tv, don’t answer your cell phone, stay away from the electronics. Fix you a cup of coffee or a cup of tea and just sit in the quiet and remember all the things you love about love. Take a minute to yourself. You must take care of you before you can begin to focus on anyone else. Give yourself a few minutes to reflect. If it is when you first wake up, you can spend the morning having a moment of calmness where everything is still. This can help you remain calm no matter what type of stress comes your way throughout the day. Another great time to do this is in the evening before you go to bed. After you have made it through your day, your kids are in bed, the chores are done, take a moment before bed to reflect and have a moment of quiet. This can help you sleep better at night, which can have a huge impact on your mood and outlook the next day.
When talking about how to enjoy the small things, it is important to look at the things that we take for granted. Every day we completely forget to stop and enjoy the world around us. The world is full of natural beauty and splendor. Instead of stopping to admire a gorgeous sunset or a cool summer breeze, we tend to work right through it. To often, we get locked behind our devices and stuck in our routines and the world around us goes by unnoticed. You can take a moment to enjoy the natural beauty of the world. You can watch a documentary instead of that television show you recorded last night. The best way to enjoy nature, however, is to get outside and look around. You can explore, find new things, and simply gain a new appreciation for the world around you.
Limit Electronic Use
Technology is constantly improving. There seems to be an app, device, or system that can carry out just about any task. Not only are individual’s becoming more reliant on technology for productivity, but there is also an increase in the use of technology for entertainment. Individuals have become so reliant on their technological devices that they are always moving. You are always checking an email, answering a phone call, reading a message, or working. We constantly check our phones to see if there are any urgent matters that need our attention. However, people sometimes forget that someone liking their post is not an urgent matter and does not require an immediate response. Limit your electronic use. Spend more time reading a book or enjoying face-to-face contact. Limiting yourself to checking your phone once every thirty minutes or so is an excellent way to enjoy the small things in life.

If you are happy with your appearance, it will affect your mood. Find clothes that make you look good and you’ll feel better as well.
To often we forget that there are small things that we can do every day to make ourselves laugh. We forget to have fun. Get in the habit of smiling as much as possible. Wake up in the morning and put a smile on your face. This will lead you to be happier and give you the chance to truly enjoy the small things around you. Find reasons to laugh. Whether it’s something silly your spouse or significant other said, a funny movie, a good joke, or something your child did; laughing is a great way to put a smile on your face. Take a moment to enjoy a good book, get involved in an excellent conversation, listen to your favorite music, or take some time to enjoy art. Finally, play. You may be grown, but that doesn’t mean that you can play and have some fun. Don’t let work become the only thing in your life. Make sure that you play with your kids, goof off with those you love, and spend time with the people in your life. Have a movie night or game night. Find a board game that everyone loves. You’d be surprised at the laughter that can come from this and how much it can improve your life.
